Peruvian Potato Initiative

The potato park is a social, cultural and economic initiative led by six indigenous communities, comprising more than six thousand people. The park is located in the biodiverse environment of the Peruvian Andes near Cusco. In order to promote ancestral agricultural methods and technologies the potato park is based on Andean cosmovision and Quechuan traditions. Communities and families are involved in the decision-making processes and there is a focus on communal work, with community members assisting one another in times of sowing and harvesting. Given that the potato park produces more than 700 varieties of potato, it also serves as a touristic attraction in the region. In this regard it develops circuits or routes where tourists can interact with the potato harvesting process in addition to getting acquainted with the Quechuan culture.
